Galeries Lafayette

Recursive have recently concluded a 3 year relationship, working with the owner/operator who has agreed a licence to open a prestigious European department store in the Katara Plaza, part of the cultural district of Doha, Qatar.

It became clear from the outset that this was going to be no ordinary project, something Recursive always relish! The department store was to occupy an existing building, however it would require extensive modification and planning as the shell of the building existed as three conjoined but independent business units, each with it’s own set of incoming services (insufficient to serve a single larger building) and unique architectural challenges.

With the client team, we began to develop the concept design, we worked tirelessly to first understanding their operational requirement before evolving the client teams initial thoughts on how technology would be integrated into the store and online environments. This involved extensive research, understanding individual brand identities, highlighting current trends, remaining sensitive to the local Qatari culture, all this whilst ensuring, most importantly, that the store had its own unique feel whilst remaining loyal to the store’s European heritage. From this process, it became clear there was an urgent need to feed into the fast developing interior architecture space plan, the interior architecture was absolutely key and could not be compromised. We provided core design services to define store digital, broadcast infrastructure, various LED displays and IT structured cabling systems across the store. We worked with the client and design team through RIBA stages 1 through 4.
